MEET SCOTT HAWKINS
SCOTT HAWKINS IN HIS OWN WORDS
Growing up in Silver Lakes Trailer Park in Clarksville and on East Larkspur Drive in Jeffersonville with my single mother, Jeanie Snelling-Lindsey, I learned the value of hard work and the importance of community. Times were sometimes tough, but family and friends always stepped-up and saw one another through.
In 1989, I graduated Jeffersonville High School and met the girl who would become my wife, Kimberly Sanders. Our meeting at Po Folks restaurant in Clarksville was the greatest blessing of my life. We’ve been married 30 years, and I could not ask for a better partner in this journey.
After high school, I received a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Education at IU Southeast. I began my teaching career at Clarksville High School, temporarily filling in for (then) Town President, Mr. Popp. That experience led me back to Jeffersonville High School, where I’ve been teaching US Government and History courses for the last 28+ years. Helping students in the classroom, on the court, or on the football field has been both challenging and rewarding. I love hearing someone yell “Hey coach!” when we’re at a restaurant or in the grocery store and getting to reconnect with a former player or student.
With my teaching career underway, my wife and I, along with our business partners Brandy Bower-Corby and Russ Corby, started Tranz4mationz Salon. Recently, we celebrated our 22nd year of serving Southern Indiana. Being part of the Tranz4mationz team and building relationships with clients and stylists has been an important part of our lives- those folks are like family to us.
As we grew our small business, we also grew our family. Kim and I are doubly blessed with two grown sons, Grant and Nikolas (Lex). Grant was Valedictorian at JHS in 2017 and is a graduate of the Kelly Business School at IU. He now works at a development company, and he and his new wife Dr. Jordan Bjortomt live in Evansville. Nikolas also was the Valedictorian of his 2020 JHS class and currently attends the Kelly Business School at IU, majoring in finance and accounting.
We instilled in our boys the importance of public service and giving back to our community. It was with that in mind that I chose to run for (and was fortunate enough to win) the Jeffersonville City Council- District 6 Seat in 2015. In 2019 and 2023, I was elected to serve in one of our at-large council seats. Since 2018, I have served on our Economic Redevelopment Commission.
My time on Jeffersonville City Council and the Economic Redevelopment Commission has been a rewarding one for me and, I hope you will agree, an exciting one for Jeffersonville. During my tenure on council, we have: added 15 policemen and 6 firemen; created Chapel Lake Park and Shirley’s Arbor; saw the growth of the Arts District; widened 10th Street and Holmans Lane; and began “Jeffersonville’s Promise”- a program that allows for any JHS student to attend Ivy Tech for no charge.
Businesses have thrived, creating thousands of new jobs in Jeffersonville. Jeffersonville was named the most fiscally sound city in Indiana and also the best place to raise a middle class family. All this without raising taxes and while developing a healthy rainy day fund.
I am running for State Representative because the people of Southern Indiana need someone that will fight for them in Indianapolis. We deserve a representative who understands struggle and hard work and has a track record of getting things done while standing strong on their core values. I look forward to being that Representative.
